British beauty Weisz recently signed on to star in and produce the film, which is based on Naomi Alderman’s 2006 novel about a woman who returns to her Orthodox Jewish home following her father’s death and reconnects with her old best friend.
Rachel’s namesake, The Notebook star MCAdams, has been tapped to play the gal pal-turned-lover, according to Variety.com.
Chilean filmmaker Sebastian Lelio will direct Disobedience, which he adapted with Rebecca Lenkiewicz, while Weisz will serve as a co-producer, alongside Room’s Ed Guiney and Frida Torresblanco, a frequent collaborator of Guillermo del Toro and Alfonso Cuaron.
Production is scheduled to begin in early 2017.
If MCAdams signs on, it won’t be the first time she has kissed another woman onscreen – she also locked lips with Noomi Rapace in Brian de Palma’s erotic thriller Passion, which was released in 2013.
She took on the role previously played by Kristin Scott Thomas in late director Alain Corneau’s original 2010 French film Love Crime, on which Passion was based.
Disobedience is currently the only project MCAdams is attached to, although she will soon hit the promotional trail for Marvel’s Doctor Strange, which opens in movie theatres later this month (Oct16).
She is also expected to reprise her role as Irene Adler in the planned Sherlock Holmes 3, which would reunite her with Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law for a new franchise sequel.
