“You think you know evil?”
If this first look at season three of Penny Dreadful is any indication, we don’t even know the half of it.
In the new trailer for Showtime’s gothic horror series, released following the network’s executive session at the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour on Tuesday, evil is coming once again for Miss Vanessa Ives (Eva Green). But when exactly will season three, and all the bloody bodice ripping contained within, hit our TV screens? Mark Sunday, May 1 at 10 p.m. on your calendars.

The main takeaway of this first bit footage, available above, is that Vanessa will be spending some time in a white, padded room where she delivers someone the following frightening warning: “Two brothers, fallen from grace. The spirit and the animal. You seek my soul. You my body. But both are promised to another.” Poor Miss Ives. Someone needs a vacation.
A third season of the John Logan-created series, co-produced with Sky in the UK, was never considered a sure thing with the ratings for the second, and as Showtime President David Nevins tells it, the future of the series remains uncertain. “It’s hard to say on Penny Dreadful,” he admitted to reporters. “It is a show that is one long saga…as opposed to Homeland with national security, each season is fairly discrete. So, I don’t know what the longevity of that show is. Is it going to be a long-running show or is going to be a three or four of five season show? We haven’t really decided yet.”
Penny Dreadful also stars Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton, Reeve Carney, Rory Kinnear, Harry Treadaway and Billie Piper, with season two guest star Patti LuPone joining the cast full time for season three in a new, yet related, character.
Penny Dreadful returns Sunday, May 1 at 10 p.m. on Showtime.
