Paramount just announced a slew of release dates led by Tom Cruise franchise Mission: Impossible 6 which will hit theaters on July 27, 2018. Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation opened in that late July corridor, and drummed up a $55.5M opening–second best three-day weekend for the spy series–before finaling at $195M domestic. But currently, Warner Bros. had a DC event film sitting on that date…so someone has to move.
In addition, Alexander Payne’s Downsizing will open wide during the Christmas four-day holiday on Dec. 22, 2017. Pic, which stars Matt Damon, Christoph Waltz, Kristen Wiig, Jason Sudeikis, Alec Baldwin and Neil Patrick Harris, is about a guy who realizes he’d have a better life if he shrinks himself. Next year’s holiday season is already stacking up as Downsizing joins 20th Century Fox’s Ferdinand, Sony’s Jumanji, Weinstein Co.’s The Six Billion Dollar Man, Universal’s Pitch Perfect 3 and Warner Bros.’ untitled PG-13 comedy — and that’s all in the wake of Star Wars: Episode VIII debuting on Dec. 15.
The Melrose lot has also teased, but set the date aside for, an untitled horror movie in Imax on April 28 next year. It will go toe-to-toe with a Blumhouse horror movie from Universal and Lionsgate’s Eugenio Derbez title How to be a Latin Lover.
Paramount is also holding Nov. 2, 2018 for an untitled event film which will face off against Disney’s live-action take on Mulan. And coming away from this weekend at the box office with Doctor Strange at $85M, and Trolls at $46.6M, we already know how rich this FSS can be.
