After tackling the current state of the Best Picture and Best Actor races earlier in the week , Gold Derby’s Tom O’Neil and I look at the field for Best Actress, arguably the most competitive lineup in many years. In
fact the contenders here outnumber those for Best Actor and that’s usually the reverse. Of course, as always, we don’t agree on everything , and in fact the SAG nominations revealed on Wednesday threw a little wrench into the mix by ignoring some that both O’Neil and I think are sure fire bets for an Oscar nomination including Elle’s critical favorite Isabelle Huppert and 20th Century Women’s Annette Bening, not to mention Loving’s Ruth Negga all passed over in favor of dark
horse Emily Blunt for The Girl On The Train. There are other questions to ask as well , especially in light of her Golden Globe and SAG nominations this week, is Meryl Streep simply inevitable at the Oscars where she is going for her 20th nomination, this time for Florence Foster Jenkins?
