Julie Andrews has landed her first starring role in nearly ten years courtesy of Netflix. The streaming giant is teaming her up with The Jim Henson Company for a new puppet-based show aimed at pre-schoolers.
Vanity Fair reported that the new series will be called ‘Julie’s Greenroom’, which began filming in May and is due to premiere on Netflix in early 2017. Andrews is to star as ‘Ms. Julie’, the headmistress of a performing arts school attended by “a new generation of kids known as the ‘Greenies,’” represented by a slew of newly-designed puppets from Henson’s workshop.
Julie Andrews is to front a Netflix children’s show
Andrews, famous for her legendary roles in The Sound of Music and Mary Poppins, has not taken on a leading role in any screen or stage projects since 2004, when she played Queen Clarisse Renaldi in Princess Diaries 2: The Royal Engagement. That role represented her first singing part since she underwent vocal cord surgery in 1997.
She’s taking an executive production role on the new series, having co-created it with her daughter Emma Walton Hamilton and Judy Rothman-Rofe. 13 episodes of a half-hour length have been commissioned initially.

‘Julie’s Greenroom’ will also boast a variety of guest stars, including Alec Baldwin, Idina Menzel, David Hyde Pierce, Carol Burnett and Josh Groban.
“Over the course of the seasons, with Ms. Julie’s guidance and inspiration from the visiting guest artists, the kids create an entirely original new show, that is a mashup of all the performing arts including mime, music, dance, improv, circus arts, voice and more,” Netflix stated in a press release on Thursday (June 2nd).
In her own statement, Andrews said: “this project represents the fulfilment of a long held dream to educate children about the wonder of the arts. I am thrilled to be partnering with my daughter and long-time co-author, Emma, to bring this show to life along with our co-creator, Judy Rothman-Rofe. We could not be more honoured to be working with the extraordinary Jim Henson Company. We are equally delighted to be premiering as a Netflix original production.”
Last year, HBO signed a deal to exclusively stream ‘Sesame Street’ – on a purely business level, so it’s possible to see this as Netflix’s answer.
