The Steve Jobs star has been tapped for the lead in Entering Hades, which is based on the 2007 true crime book of the same name by John Leake. It detailed the double life of Unterweger, a renowned Austrian journalist and author who investigated murders by day, and turned killer at night, targeting prostitutes around the world.
He was first convicted of murder in 1976 and was released from prison in 1990. However, he soon started killing again, and following his conviction for a string of murders, Unterweger committed suicide by hanging himself in 1994, aged 43.
Officials at Broad Green Pictures have secured the rights to the story, which Oscar-winning Birdman co-writer Alexander Dinelaris will rework from an original screenplay by Bill Wheeler.
Conor MCCaughan and Daniel Emmerson from Fassbender’s DMC Film company will produce the project with Bob Cooper and Richard Saperstein, of Storyscape Entertainment, reports Variety.com.
“With Bob and Richard’s vision and Michael’s keen ability to bring captivating characters to the big screen, we are confident that Entering Hades will be an entertaining thriller that draws a big audience,” reads a statement issued by Broad Green Pictures bosses Gabriel and Daniel Hammond.
Cooper and Saperstein add, “Michael Fassbender is one of today’s most talented actors and we are thrilled to be in partnership with him, as well as Conor and Daniel, to bring this extraordinary story to the screen.”
A projected release date for Entering Hades has yet to be announced.
