Originally running from 1996 to 2003, ‘Sabrina, the Teenage Witch’ saw 16-year-old high school student Sabrina Spellman find out she was a witch, with her aunts Zelda and Hilda offering guidance as to how she should run her life with her newly discovered powers. Melissa Joan Hart took the leading titular role and she, along with her fellow cast mates from the original series came back together over the weekend at LA Comic Con.
Melissa Joan Hart says she’s not involved in the new show
The reunion of Hart, Nick Bakay, Caroline Rhea, Beth Broderick, Nate Richert, Alimi Ballard, David Lascher, Soleil Moon Frye and Elisa Donovan came after it was revealed a brand new Sabrina-centric series would be coming to The CW, darker than what we had seen before. Set to introduce an all-new cast, and predicted to follow the stories told in the comic books ‘The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’, it’s going to be unlike any of the ‘Sabrina’ episodes of the past and be set in the same universe as ‘Riverdale’.
Speaking during a panel at the event, which was hosted by Entertainment Weekly, Hart explained: “We’re not involved… The rights reverted back to [Archie Comics], and they’re doing ‘The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’, which is a darker sort of twist.
“I think our show was about magic and family, and I think the new one – it sounds like, I have no idea – but the new one is going to be more about witchcraft, dark stuff. I think it sounds more ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ than it does ‘Sabrina’, so I think it will appeal to a different kind of audience and be a totally different show.”
Though it doesn’t look like Hart will be involved with the new series in any capacity, that hasn’t stopped fans from putting together their own theories about how she could return to the franchise as one of Sabrina’s aunts. That would certainly be a nostalgic dream, but one we can’t imagine will be happening unless some major strings are being pulled behind-the-scenes.
