Four special episodes of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life was released on the streaming service last month (Nov16), but the star of the show has avoided tuning in – and she has no intention to.
Lauren, who plays Lorelai Gilmore, admits she has only recently seen the original seven seasons of the U.S. drama series, which ended in 2007, after filming the new reboot, as she hates watching herself on screen.
“There are many actors who learn a lot by watching themselves. I’m not one of those people, so I stayed away from it,” she shared.
She called filming the new episodes the “best experience”, but that’s where her enthusiasm for the revival ends: “I don’t learn anything and this has the added level of… I was so on another plane, it felt like, during the doing of the thing, and I had some of my favorite moments I’ve ever had as an actor and as a person in that experience,” she explained.
“I just want to leave it there for now – that was enough. That was more than enough. It was the best experience I’ve ever had,” Lauren added.
The final episode in the revival is titled Fall, and features a few big emotional moments for the cast, including Lauren’s onscreen daughter Rory, played by Alexis Bledel. And the actress was so traumatised by the plotline, she didn’t even read the script before shooting.
“I couldn’t read Fall, I just couldn’t read it,” Lauren admitted. “I even think – and I’m sorry – I shot a couple scenes without having read the whole thing. I was on this crazy high and feeling so thankful and so pleased with what the material was, I almost didn’t want to know how it ended.
“I was worried where it was going and what if I’m disappointed? But finally I had to do it, ’cause I really had to film it, and I sat at the kitchen table and I cried from page one all the way to the end. It was the biggest emotional experience.”
