Kodi Smit-McPhee, probably best known for starring opposite Viggo Mortensen in The Road, has been cast as Nightcrawler in Brian Singer’s highly anticipated X-Men Apocalpyse. Young Smith-McPhee will appear alongside Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult and Michael Fassbender in what represents the biggest role of his short career.

“Excited to welcome @kodismitmcphee to the cast of #XmenApocalypse as young #Nightcrawler,” Singer said in a post on his Instagram account on Tuesday night.
As well playing The Boy in The Road, Smith-McPhee has also provided the lead voice in Tim Burton’s animated hit ParaNorman as well as starring in the smash-hit Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. He recently worked with Fassbender on the independent western movi Slow West, playing a 16-year-old boy on a journey across 19th Century frontier America in search of the woman he loves.

His new character Nightcrawler is known in the X-Men universe for his adhesive hands and feet as well as his ability to teleport. The acclaimed Scottish actor Alan Cumming played the role in the 2003 movie X-Men 2. It’s almost a year to the day that Singer first teased the idea of bringing Nightcrawler back for X-Men: Apocalypse.
Patrick Stewart has already confirmed that he and Ian McKellen will not be appear as first generation mutants in the upcoming movie because it is set in the 1980s and explores the earlier lives of its characters. Kodi Smit-McPhee joins a cast primarily filled with other younger versions of mutants, including Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, Alexandra Shipp as Storm and Tye Sheridan as Cyclops
X-Men Apocalypse is set for May 27, 2016.
