Official updates concerning the condition of Joni Mitchell, who was hospitalised back in March, have been few and far between. However, fellow musician David Crosby has revealed that, while she is recovering at home, she is unable to speak.
In conversation with HuffPost Live, the 73 year old guitarist answered a Twitter question about Mitchell’s condition. “To my knowledge she is not speaking yet. She is home, she is in care, she is recovering,” he responded. “She took a terrible hit. She had an aneurysm, and nobody found her for a while. And she’s going to have to struggle back from it the way you struggle back from a traumatic brain injury.”

Crosby and Mitchell have known each other since the 1960s when they were both part of the Los Angeles ‘Laurel Canyon’ scene at the end of the decade. Having dated for a while, the pair have remained close friends ever since. Despite that bleak description, he remains cautiously optimistic that Mitchell will continue to show improvement in her condition.

“She’s a tough girl and very smart,” he said. “So, how much she’s going to come back and when, I don’t know, and I’m not going to guess.”
Mitchell, 71, was taken to hospital on March 30th this year having been discovered unconscious at her home in Los Angeles. While she regained consciousness in the ambulance trip, she was placed in intensive care upon arrival.
The most recent official update on her recovery was on April 28th, when her official website released a statement saying “a full recovery is expected”. This was in quick response to an erroneous report by TMZ that claimed Mitchell’s condition had taken a turn for the worse and that she was in a coma.
