The Social Network star portrays a young Lex Luthor in the highly-anticipated movie adaptation, and in this version, the notoriously bald comic book villain is initially depicted with scraggly, mid-length hair.
Director Zack Snyder wanted to keep the style change under wraps during filming, so Jesse had to cover up his head when walking to and from the set, much to his embarrassment.
“I had this wig on and Lex Luthor is notoriously bald and so they didn’t want to reveal that my character has hair, and so I had to wear that (head scarf) for months,” he told U.S. breakfast show Good Morning America.
“As great as it is to feel that you’re playing this great role in this great movie, it’s incredibly emasculating walking to your work in kind of an old handkerchief!”
Jesse also confirms he was initially offered a very different part in the movie, although he and Zack have both so far refused to reveal exactly which role he could have played.
“They asked me originally to play another role and I didn’t think I could do it,” the 32-year-old stated, “and then I think maybe I was rude to the director in saying I couldn’t do it, and he was like, ‘Wow, that guy’s rude enough to be this evil character!'”
The Man of Steel sequel also features Henry Cavill as Superman, Ben Affleck as Batman, and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, but Jesse has no plans to check out the finished cut of the action-packed blockbuster, because he’s always too critical of his own performances.
“I try to avoid it (watching his own films) because it’s like… hearing yourself on your answering machine or something…,” he explained. “It always sounds worse, it’s like that (answering machine voice) times a million! ‘Cause not only are you criticising your stupid face, but also your voice sounds weird, everything about yourself. So yeah, I’m just critical; everybody’s critical.”
