Once the final weekend boxoffice results were in, Disney’s Into The Woods had squeaked by Universal’s Unbroken to claim the runner-up spot to The Hobbit and cement its status as a certified holiday hit. Movie musicals are hit and miss but in director Rob Marshall’s hands along with the original creators — composer  Stephen Sondheim and screenwriter James Lapine — this Broadway smash has also been a critical success for Disney.

But it wasn’t easy getting to the screen. In fact it took 27 years. Here’s a look at how it all finally came together to become one of the highlights of this holiday season and a sure-fire awards contender with Best Picture, Actress (Emily Blunt) and Supporting Actress (Meryl Streep) Golden Globe nominations already under its belt.
