Throughout this year’s awards season, it seems to be apparent that some individuals in the film industry are growing tired of superhero movies and the genre’s dominance over the box office in recent years.
James Gunn defends superhero movies after the genre gets dissed during award season
The attack of superhero flick’s begin during the Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday (Feb 21st) when ‘Nightcrawler’ director Dan Gilroy received Best First Feature, while taking to the stage he slammed the “tsunami of superhero movies” that audiences are flooded with today.
One day later at the 87th Academy Awards, comedic actor Jack Black also dissed the comic book genre during his performance in the opening segment, where he sang, “opening with lots of zeroes, all we get are superheroes: Superman, Spider-man, Batman, Jediman, Sequelman, Prequelman – formulaic scripts!”

As the award season is now over, ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ director James Gunn has come forward to defend superhero movies and challenge “serious” filmmakers to prove they put more effort into making independent films.
“Whatever the case, the truth is, popular fare in any medium has always been snubbed by the self-appointed elite,” he wrote in a lengthy Facebook post. “What bothers me slightly is that many people assume because you make big films that you put less love, care, and thought into them then people do who make independent films or who make what are considered more serious Hollywood films.”
“If you think people who make superhero movies are dumb, come out and say we’re dumb,” he added. “But if you, as an independent filmmaker or a ‘serious’ filmmaker, think you put more love into your characters than the Russo Brothers do ‘Captain America’, or Joss Whedon does the Hulk, or I do a talking raccoon, you are simply mistaken.”

Gunn also pointed out the irony in Gilroy’s remarks as his wife Rene Russo has starred in two ‘Thor’ movies. “Really, that seems like you’ve drowned horribly in that tsunami,” Gunn wrote, in reference to the fact.
