The supermodel is joining the second season of National Geographic’s Years of Living Dangerously, which studies the destruction of the Amazon rainforest.
The longtime environmental advocate announced the news on Instagram by posting a shot of herself crouching by a tree and flashing a peace sign.
She added the caption: “I’m excited to be joining season two of @YearsofLiving Dangerously as a correspondent, exploring deforestation and climate change in my beautiful home country of Brazil.
“The new season will air globally later this year on @NatGeoChannel #Yearsproject #Amazonforest.”
Gisele’s new TV deal comes a week after she revealed her participation in the United Nation Environment Programme’s Wild for Life campaign to end illegal animal trafficking. The initiative has been set up to raise awareness about poaching around the world.
“Recently, I was made aware of the numerous challenges facing so many of our most beloved species because of the illegal trade in wildlife,” she wrote on The Huffington Post. “This shameful trade is pushing species to the edge of extinction.
“One story that touched my heart is the plight of the Pangolin, a little known creature that is the most illegally trafficked mammal in the world. As a result of greed they may sadly be gone before most of us have ever even learned their name or seen one. This is the unfortunate reality that makes it hard to be hopeful for their future.”
“Nonetheless, there is hope,” she continued. “We need to prompt a radical, global shift in thinking about the illegal trade in wildlife. This is why I am supporting the United Nation’s Wild for Life campaign.”
