As the news of Britain’s decision to leave the European Union sinks in, the British television and film industry is left wondering how it will be impacted. Currently the picture being painted looks pretty bleak, with industry heads and studios voicing their concerns for the future of British filmmaking.
‘Game of Thrones’ is filmed in Northern Ireland, which is now out of the EU.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Michael Ryan, chairman of the Independent Film & Television Alliance said: “The decision to exit the European Union is a major blow to the U.K. film and TV industry. This decision has just blown up our foundation.
“As of today, we no longer know how our relationships with co-producers, financiers and distributors will work…The U.K. creative sector has been a strong and vibrant contributor to the economy — this is likely to be devastating for us.”

Hollywood film producer and co-chairman of The Weinstein Company, Harvey Weinstein told Deadline that he saw Brexit as a “disaster.” “I think there will be discrimination now against some of the product and what it means to be European product,” he added.
“A lot of TV stations in Europe are under quotas. When you do War And Peace, that was accepted as European. It could be very costly in the movie and TV industry in terms of content branding. European branding is very important. It’s a big deal for these young British filmmakers.”
The Motion Picture Assn. of America said they were waiting to see how things would play out. “While it will take time to understand the full implications of the referendum result, we urge the UK government to prioritize a stable environment for the film and television sector to ensure it continues to be a driver for jobs and growth in the years to come,” an MPAA spokesman said in a statement to the LA Times.
