President-Elect Donald Trump told CBS News’ Lesley Stahl that he will not throw out all parts of Obamacare despite having said before the election that he would do away with it. In his first post-election television interview, for Sunday’s 60 Minutes, Trump said he will keep the portions covering people with pre-existing conditions and people under age 26 who are living at their parents’ home.
He also said Hillary and Bill Clinton called him separately to offer congratulations, characterizing the former president as “gracious” in his call and saying his former opponent in her call “couldn’t have been nicer.”
“So, Hillary called, and it was a lovely call, and it was a tough call for her, I mean, I can imagine,” Trump said in a clip of the interview that aired tonight on CBS Evening News. “Tougher for her than it would have been for me. I mean, for me, it would have been very, very difficult. She couldn’t have been nicer. She just said, ‘Congratulations, Donald, well done.’
And I said, ‘I want to thank you very much; you were a great competitor.’ She is very strong and very smart.”
Bill Clinton, Trump said, “couldn’t have been more gracious. He said it was an amazing run. One of the most amazing he’s ever seen. He was very, very, really, very nice.”
