As one of the most divisive movies to come from the DC Extended Universe, it’s fair to say ‘Suicide Squad’ has both its heavy critics and its heavily loyal fans. Bringing in a slew of new faces to take on some of DC’s most recognisable villains and anti-heroes, the movie was set to serve as a launchpad for much of the DCEU, but failed to light a fire in the hearts of everybody watching.
Jared Leto as The Joker in ‘Suicide Squad’
David Ayer was the director responsible for the flick, and whilst he has said in the past he has his regrets about where he took the movie and its central villain, he’s still very much aware about the success it DID see, and how proud he should be because of that.
Taking to his Twitter account to respond to a fan who asked if he regretted doing the ‘Suicide Squad’ movie altogether, the filmmaker said: “Not for a second. Not for one second. I got to work with amazing people. It won an Oscar, did incredible business. Launched a franchise and spinoff. And like it or not it’s halfway to cult status. I grew as a person, grew creatively. Warners took a chance on me. I’m grateful”.
Though he had a great time creating the flick, it’s not something he’ll be returning to, as Gavin O’Connor has been brought in to direct the planned sequel. Margot Robbie and Jared Leto are pretty much confirmed to be making their returns to the flick as Harley Quinn and The Joker respectively, alongside Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. There are also rumours of Dwayne Johnson joining the series as Black Adam; an anti-hero who’s also getting his own movie at some point in the next few years.
