‘Clueless’ Musical Is In Development, Director Amy Heckerling Reveals

Clueless, the hit 1990s teen comedy drama, is being adapted into a musical. The news was announced by film director Amy Heckerling on Thursday (25th June). Heckerling was responsible for writing, directing and producing the 1995 hit and she is now turning her attention to a musical.

The upcoming musical will reportedly be in a juke box style i.e. using music from the original film and time period. This is a logical step as the Clueless soundtrack was well received and included such hits as The Muff’s ‘Kids In America’, Coolio’s ‘Rollin’ With My Homies’ and No Doubt’s ‘Just A Girl’.

If you’re hoping to see the musical anytime soon, you’ll be disappointed. Speaking in an interview with ET (via Variety), Heckerling revealed she had written a vague overview. However, she explained the process of creating a musical is ‘slow’ and the story is still in development. 61-year-old Heckerling has not worked on a musical before and expressed her surprise at how much slower the musical’s development was – even than in movies!

“Everything goes so slowly, I thought movies took a long time,” Heckerling revealed.

Clueless, which starred Alicia Silverstone, was an adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic novel Emma. Heckerling took the story of Emma and exchanged 19th Century Britain for Beverly Hills and the strict social conventions of Austen’s time for teen antics and their often fraught romances. Silverstone starred alongside Stacy Dash, the late Brittany Murphy, Paul Rudd and Donald Faison.

In addition to the film Clueless and its spin-off television series, Heckerling is best known for directing the 1980s hit Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Since Clueless she has worked on such television series as Gossip Girl and The Office

Clueless is not the first 1990s hit to be transformed into a musical. Cruel Intentions (1999), which starred Sarah Michelle Gellar and Reese Witherspoon, was successful adapted into a juke box musical format.
