Sorry, guys. As exciting as it might have been to have Calvin Harris pull a Taylor Swift and release a song about their breakup, that’s not the case.
As soon as word spread that Harris had a new song coming and that it had anything to do with a broken relationship, fans began hoping that it was going to be about his highly publicized split with the singer and her quick relationship with Tom Hiddleston. Wishful thinking, y’all. The music producer did, however, team up with singer John Newman for a reggae track about infidelity which was just released called “Olé.”
“This song has nothing to do with Taylor,” a source tells E! News. “He likes this song a lot. People can interpret the song how they want to, but in the end it’s just an artist expression.” Another insider explains to E! News that this song was created months before the Taylor drama happened. So there’s that.
Regardless, the lyrics prove to tell a story about a juicy cheating scandal.
“My heart speaks/ I ain’t seen you or been with you for weeks/ But I see online that you’ve begun to be/ A good girl and take trips with your boyfriend/ Being attentive, continue to pretend,” Newman sings in one verse.
“But no, cause there’s no telling how far you can go/ You’ve hidden my name on your phone so you can/ Call me to tell me you’ve been going through hell/ Left him alone and you booked in a hotel.”
Both Harris and Newman spoke about the track months ago. Back in April, Harris talked to Capital FM about an upcoming Newman track, saying, “It’s with John Newman but it’s much better than ‘Blame.'”
So, when Newman spoke to MTV in May and was asked about this amazing song, he responded, “We have done a tune together and it’s incredible. I don’t want to say too much ‘cause I didn’t know he said that!”
“My next single is coming after this [his tune ‘Give Me Your Love’ with Sigala]. It’s produced by Calvin and…it’s kind of a reggae vibe which is quite cool and…we’ve done something else together behind the scenes as well, which is something which has shocked us both. I think because we were so proud of the success of ‘Blame’ and then we kinda listened to [this new song] and we were like, ‘This is totally different to anything we’ve ever made and done together.'”
He added: “[It’s] really exciting and I’m excited to keep on working with him and to start bringing new singles and new singles and that’s what I’m going to continue to do throughout the year.”
