The Brit Awards has announced a special segment paying tribute to the “visionary and ground-breaking” David Bowie at the winner’s ceremony next month.
Max Lousada, chairman of the Brits, stated in a press release on Tuesday (January 12th) that the annual awards ceremony would honour the “extraordinary life and work” of “one of our greatest icons” at London’s O2 Arena on February 24th.
Bowie, who passed away from liver cancer on Sunday at the age of 69 just two days after the release of his 25th album Blackstar, was named Best British Male at the 2014 ceremony, becoming the oldest recipient of one of the awards in Brits history.

“David Bowie was one of the most important and influential songwriters and performers ever and, like so many fans around the world, we’re devastated to hear of his loss,” Lousada’s statement read.

“A visionary and ground-breaking pioneer, he has inspired generations of musicians and will continue to shape music for many years to come. Naturally, we wish to honour his extraordinary life and work at the forthcoming Brit Awards and pay a fitting tribute to one of our greatest icons.”
In 1996, Bowie received the lifetime accolade of Outstanding Contribution to Music from the Brits, so has already been honoured with just about everything they could possibly bestow upon him.
In New York, a memorial concert featuring Cyndi Lauper, Perry Farrell and The Roots has been organised with legendary Bowie producer Tony Visconti leading the house band, will be happening on March 31 at Carnegie Hall. “The unexpected death of David Bowie has turned this tribute, which we have worked on for the past seven months, into a memorial concert,” a statement read on the organiser’s website.
“This year’s concert will certainly be remembered as a poignant celebration of his music by his friends, peers, and fans. We are all deeply saddened by this news. The timing of our public on-sale date is bizarre in its timing… may God’s love be with you.”
