Brian May doesn’t understand the meaning of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’.
The Queen guitarist has dismissed recent claims that the chart-topping single is about bandmate Freddie Mercury coming out as gay – but admitted he’s not sure what it means.
Brian said: ”What’s it about? None of us know.
”Freddie never talked about it to my knowledge and didn’t want to and that’s the way it should be.
”He had something in his mind and he loved to spin these little pieces of magic. A little bit of reality and little bit of fantasy.”
The rock icon said the song’s lyrics are impossible to understand.
He told the BBC: ”If anyone tries to unravel it, they’ll never manage it because they’ll never know what went into those lyrics.”
And fellow bandmate Roger Taylor, 66, said he too, has no idea what it refers to.
He said: ”What does it mean? I get asked that all the time and I have no answer.”
The discussion was triggered by biographer Lesley Ann-Jones, who said the lyrics to the hit song symbolised Freddie killing off his heterosexual self.
