Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe of Starz’s Outlander have what is arguably the hottest chemistry on TV—we dare you to watch season one’s wedding episode and try not to blush—so it only figures that viewers would wonder if the charming and oh-so-friendly stars are dating in real life. And wonder they have since the show first started more than a year ago.
So are they actually dating?

“We’re not together,” Caitriona told E! News exclusively today while promoting Outlander’s April return. “It’s funny. We’ve always said from the get go that we’re incredibly great friends. And to have that friendship and that closeness and to be able to get along as we do on set, it’s great that we’re able to get along that well. We’re not together. I’m sorry to break people’s hearts. They like to try to maybe replicate the Claire and Jamie story. But I think it would be difficult for us to work together and be together.”
“Yeah, we could try…” Sam interjected (and you have to watch the video for Cait’s reaction to that!).
“No, I think it’s strange, isn’t it?” he continued, musing about the fans’ desire to see them date in real life. “Because I think people buy into the show and us saying it’s not real, they feel like they’ve been duped. It’s like, ‘You acted it. You lied to us!’ And I’m like, ‘Well, sorry!'”

Outlander returns for its second season on Starz in April, as Jamie and Claire head to France to try to “change history” and save tens of thousands of lives.
