‘Aladdin’ Fans’ Wishes Come True! Disney Orders Live-Action Prequel, ‘Genies’

Yes, there’s yet another Disney live-action movie in the works. This time it’s not an original animated film which is getting a make-over but a prequel to Aladdin, based around the Genie character. The news was confirmed by Disney on Wednesday (15th July).

Robin WilliamsRobin Williams voiced the Genie in the 1992 Aladdin animated film.

Aladdin, the Arabian folk tale from One Thousand and One Nights, was transformed into an animated film by Disney in 1992. The Genie, notably for his booming voice and blue skin, was voiced by the late comedian Robin Williams. His character is one of the most beloved in Disney history, largely owing to the humour and warmth Williams injected into the film.

The upcoming live-action film Genies will centre on the Genie character and how he ended up in the lamp in the first place. According to reports, Disney are hoping the project will lead up to a live-action remake of Aladdin

Damian Shannon and Mark Swift are teaming up to write the upcoming film. The pair are best known for working together on Freddy Vs. Jason (2003) and Friday 13th (2009). Although the two have worked on comedies before, including the Baywatch movie and the upcoming O’ Lucky Day, Genies will be new ground for the pair as it promises to be a family comedy.

Tripp Vinsen is set to produce. Vinsen served as executive producer on San Andreas, Hansel and Gretal: Witch Hunters and Journey to the Center of the Earth

We appear to be coming to a stage where the few Disney classics which haven’t been remade into a live-action movie are in the minority. Cinderella and Maleficent (based on Sleeping Beauty) have already proved hugely successful in the box office. Production on a live-action version of Beauty and the Beast is already well underway, with Emma Watson starring as Belle and Dan Stevens as the Beast. Other live-action remakes which are on the cards include Dumbo, Mulan, The Jungle Book, Winnie The Pooh and Pinocchio

The Hollywood Reporter was the first to report the news.
