Adele will not release a new album in 2014, according to financial documents published by her record label XL. There had been rumours that the singer’s third record might appear before the end of the year and give the British music industry a boost ahead of Christmas, though XL said they are now expecting the record in 2015.
Adele will not release a new album in 2014 – but she’s already made XL a fortune
“There will not be a further new release by Adele during 2014 and consequently there will be a fall in XL’s turnover and profits,” the label said in an annual financial report obtained by the New York Times. The label said Adele’s albums (which have sold 35 million copies worldwide) accounted for a “significant proportion” of the company’s recent receipts but that “the directors are confident that by pursuing management policies … XL will continue to achieve success with other artists”.
Adele has fuelled speculation that she would release a surprise album before the end of the year by tweeting on her birthday in May, “Bye bye 25.See you again later in the year.”

The financial documents also show that Beggars Group joint owners Richard Russell and Martin Mills have now shared £53 million in dividends from XL since 2011. The bosses received a £17 million dividend in 2011 and a further £24 million in 2013. They took £12 million this year, meaning both have received £26.5 million from the company.
XL remains one of the UK’s most successful independent labels and, along with Adele, boasts top artists including Jack White, Thom Yorke’s Atoms for Peace and the current favourite for the Mercury Music Prize, FKA Twigs.
