She’s the world’s most in-demand model and recently named co-designer of the new Tommy Hilfiger x Gigi Hadid Collection, so it comes as little surprise to find Gigi Hadid as the selection to cover the October issue of Harper’s BAZAAR.
As part of the spotlight editorial, the 21-year-old beauty takes readers through a day in her hectic (yet rewarding) life, including her favorite NYC spots, culinary weaknesses, how she stays fit, and what it was like to work with iconic designer Tommy Hilfiger.
Set to hit newsstands on September 20, highlights from Miss Hadid’s interview are below, along with a sneak peek at the gorgeous spread shot by Karl Lagerfeld and Bjorn Iooss – which features Gigi in ensembles by Fendi Haute Fourrure, as well as her looks from her new collaboration Tommy x Gigi.
On how she stays fit:
“I rode horses and played volleyball back home, so when I came to New York, it was really hard for me to just go to the gym. I need to have a sport and wake up and want to get better at something and boxing does that for me… My personal motto is “Eat clean to stay fit, have a burger to stay sane,” so if I’m in the mood, I’ll go to JG Melon in the West Village.”
On her favorite spots in New York City:
“My favorite places in the city are the South Street Seaport or any skyscraper-type view, just to look over the city. There used to be an Emack & Bolio’s on Houston, which is my favorite ice cream place—I love the Grasshopper Pie—and I would walk past it to the gym every day, but one day it was closed and I almost cried. Now I’ll just Postmate pints of it to my apartment. If I’m going shopping, I would go to Saks because I want it to be all in one place. I also love Topshop.”
On the process of creating the Tommy Hilfiger x Gigi Hadid collection:
“It was so fun; we would literally close down the Tommy building in midtown, like they were trying to kick me out. They just think of everything, they even made me cupcakes with my name on them. They made it very welcoming for me. I had “Gigi’s Studio” over my first design studio. I worked a lot with the textures first, before we started getting into shapes because I wanted it to feel good. I wanted the sweaters to be soft and the coats to be a good thickness and all of the little things. The second and third meetings were more of the details… I hope that people can feel that time we put into it when they put the clothes on because the quality was really important to us.”
On working with Tommy Hilfiger:
“Designing with Tommy was an incredible experience. Every time I see him he just reminds me that being positive is so important. He’s always happy and welcoming and warm and it trickles down through his entire company. Being nice is so important. It’s something that I think Tommy appreciates in me and something I appreciate in him, so that’s why we work really well together.”
On how she unwinds at the end of the day:
“I love to sing Broadway show tunes at home, which makes me the worst neighbor but is a good stress reliever. I love “Popular” from Wicked. That’s the only one I’ll tell you because I know at some point, someone’s going to ask me to do this and that’s the only one I’m willing to do publicly. My boyfriend gets into it too.”
