Tao Okamoto, who co-starred in this summer’s Batman v. Superman: The Dawn of Justice, has been cast along with Haruka Abe (47 Ronin) and Kihiro — the front-man for the Japanese punk group Loka — in Adam Sherman’s She’s Just A Shadow. The film marks the acting debut for Kihiro. The gangster drama just got underway in Tokyo.
Japanese actress and model Okamoto was one of the faces of Ralph Lauren before she started her acting career with her debut in The Wolverine. She is currently in the TV series The Man in High Castle and Hannibal.
Described as “a modern, dreamlike take” on the crime genre, the film is about a matriarchal crime family engaged in a vicious gang war. A deranged serial killer is on the loose and the only thing more dangerous than him is the drug-addled love triangle within the family itself.
Although the film has a mostly Japanese cast, it is going to be filmed in English by Sherman, who serves as its writer/director and producer.
Abe has appeared in the BBC’s Ideal and the science-fiction series Slingers directed by Steve Barron. Her film credits include Cyberbully and in the video for Clean Bandit’s song “Rather Be,” which has amassed more than 400M views on YouTube.
She’s Just A Shadow is filmmaker Adam Sherman’s third feature, after successful runs with Happiness Runs, which was loosely based on his own life, and Crazy Eyes, starring Lukas Haas, Madeline Zima, and Jake Busey. Sherman also served as producer on Wristcutters: A Love Story, Marfa Girl, and Marfa Girl 2.
The film is being produced in association with the Tokyo-based production company michaelgion; it is co-produced by MeeRa Kim (Horror Haiku).
