How would you react if someone you thought you’d never see again suddenly reappeared in your life pretending not to know you? That’s the premise of Amazon Studios and IFC Films’ Complete Unknown, which offers up challenging character study of two people at serious crossroads in their lives. Though the premise might suggest a vibe somewhat similar to Richard Linklater’s Before trilogy, it tilts decidedly toward mystery and thriller, beginning at a dinner party where Tom (Michael Shannon) meets his coworker’s date, Alice (Rachel Weisz). Recognizing her from his long ago past, she refuses to admit their history. After she suddenly bolts on the party, Tom chases Alice down, kicking off an all-night odyssey as he contemplates the need to change his life and she considers how to stop changing hers.

Directed by Joshua Marston from a script co-written with Julian Sheppard, Complete Unknown premiered this year at Sundance It hits theaters today.
