As usual, the Grammy Awards provided us with so many ups and downs when it aired on Monday (February 15th 2016), but one of the best moments hands down has got to be Taylor Swift’s receipt of the Album of the Year award. It has managed to be the event’s most awkward, most empowering and most hilarious moment all in one go.
Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift make adorable besties
Since her name was announced as the winner of the Grammy for Album of the Year for her album ‘1989’, things got a little crazy. First of all, it was her BFF Selena Gomez that absolutely lost it when Swift came up as the winner. She was the first on her feet and looked like she was about to cry with happiness over her friend’s success. True friendship right there.
Then Swift was greeted by her friend and collaborator Jack Antonoff, but instead of immediately giving him a huge hug, they shared what was apparently a special handshake. Yes, apparently it’s still acceptable to have a special handshake at the age of 26. Go figure.
Obviously, the most iconic moment of that whole deal was when Swift blatantly called out Kanye West for his offensive lyrics in his new song ‘Famous’. ‘I want to say to all the young women out there, there are going to be people along the way who will try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame’, she said. ‘But if you just focus on the work and you don’t let those people sidetrack you, someday when you get where you’re going, you’ll look around and you will know that it was you and the people who love you who put you there.’
More: Taylor Swift calls out Kanye
Attentive viewers will have noticed Gomez’s admiring smile from the audience, but they may also have seen a very unimpressed looking Tori Kelly who appeared to be leaning back in her chair and scowling while Swift was giving her speech. Maybe she’s a Kanye West fan. Whatever the reason for her sulky expression, it made for amusing headlines the next day.
