10 years have gone by since Stephanie Meyer gave us the gift of Twilight, and to celebrate the anniversary the famous author has given Twihards a real treat—a new Twilight novel!

But there’s a catch.

It’s not another Bella-Edward love story; instead it’s a love story that follows two new lovers, Beau and Edythe. The special edition is completely gender-swapped and now follows Beau Swan’s move to Forks where the new character meets Edythe Cullen, who, of course, is still a vampire. The new work is titled Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined.

Meyer appeared on Good Morning America Tuesday morning to talk all about her surprise release and explained why she gave fans this twist.

“I wanted to do something fun for the 10th anniversary and the publisher wanted like a forward, and I thought well maybe something more interesting,” Meyer explained.

Even though the story is essentially the same thing, Meyer added that there are little nuances that are different, keeping the readers even more engaged. “The further you get in the more it changes because the personalities get a little bit different, but it starts out very similar,” she added.

“Really it is the same story it’s just a love story it doesn’t matter who’s the boy or who’s the girl it still works out.”

The original character of Bella has been criticized in the past for being “a damsel in distress,” which she also addressed.

“It’s always bothered me a little bit because anyone surrounded by superheroes is going to be…in distress. We don’t have the powers,” Meyer said. “I thought, ‘What if we switched it around a bit and see how a boy does,’ and, you know, it’s about the same.”

The best part about this news is that the book is available for purchase! So will we get a full series and movies starring Beau and Edythe? Probably not. “I think that this is just one version with Beau,” she said.

“I don’t really see that happening and a lot of the people I’d put in it would be like Grace Kelly so it’s a little too late for some of my first choices.”
