We love a good true story blockbuster as, indeed, was aptly demonstrated at the 88th Academy Awards; success came to the likes of ‘Spotlight’, ‘The Revenant’ and ‘The Danish Girl’, and now we’ve got a number of music biopics to look forward to like ‘Nina’ and ‘Miles Ahead’. But what historical events of the world will be newly documented on the big screen in the coming months?
Here are 8 forthcoming biographical/historical films that we’re definitely looking forward to:
Emma Watson and Daniel Bruhl star in ‘Colonia’
1. Colonia (April 15th 2016) – Emma Watson’s latest indie venture explores the Chilean commune known as Colonia Dignidad, now called Villa Baviera. It’s been described as a cult and was the subject of much controversy regarding child sex abuse, torture and even links with the Nazis. Watson plays a young woman searching for her missing boyfriend alongside Daniel Brühl and it has been directed by the Oscar winning Florian Gallenberger.
2. The Founder (August 5th 2016) – Ever wondered how McDonald’s, the mother of all fast food chains, became such a huge part of civilisation? Putting it simply, it wasn’t a smooth ride and ‘The Founder’ tells all about how entrepreneur Ray Kroc (Michael Keaton) took it over from the original founders and made it into the major franchise it is today.
Matthew Mcconaughey plays Confederacy rebel Newton Knight
3. Free State of Jones (June 24th 2016) – An appropriately political drama ahead of the Presidential elections, this movie is inspired by farmer and revolutionist Newton Knight who led an army of civilians against the Confederacy rule of Jones County, Mississippi in 1862 during the American Civil War. Matthew McConaughey plays Knight, and the resemblance between the pair is uncanny.

4. Sully (September 9th 2016) – Clint Eastwood’s latest directorial project sees ‘Captain Phillips’ star Tom Hanks become a captain once again as it follows airline captain Chesley Sullenberger’s miraculous accomplishment of emergency landing the US Airways Flight 1549 into the Hudson River back in 2009, ensuring that all passengers and crew survived.
Colin Firth and Jude Law are literary legends in Genius
5. Genius (July 29th 2016) – Based on the A. Scott Berg book ‘Max Perkins: Editor of Genius’, this period flick details the career of a little-known literary editor responsible for overseeing such works by Thomas Wolfe, Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald, who are played by Jude Law, Dominic West and Guy Pearce respectively. Colin Firth plays Perkins in this, Michael Grandage’s directorial debut.
6. Dunkirk (July 21st 2017) – Christopher Nolan will follow-up ‘Interstellar’ with ‘Dunkirk’; a World War Two thriller about the famous Dunkirk evacuation. One Direction singer Harry Styles will reportedly make his acting debut in the movie, alongside Tom Hardy and Mark Rylance.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt to play Edward Snowden
7. Snowden (September 16th 2016) – Hailed by some as a hero and a whistleblower and by others as a traitor and a villain, Edward Snowden used his position in the CIA to leak classified information to the public to inform them of ethically questionable goings-on in his line of work. Directed by Oliver Stone, the movie will star Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Snowden.
8. Jackie (2017) – This heart-breaking drama follows the life of the popular and bereaved First Lady Jackie after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963. Starring Natalie Portman, the film is from a screenplay by Noah Oppenheim (‘The Maze Runner’).
